The grid of emoji shows how you got to the completed grid. The grid starts out empty:

Entering a correct word moves you to the right, and so a perfect game will look like a row of ➡️:

However, entering an incorrect word moves you up the grid (adding new rows if needed):

If you remove an incorrect word, you move back down, so a game where you mostly get it right but put in one wrong word you have to remove later might look like this:

Similarly, removing a correct word moves you left. (If there are two arrows in the same place, we draw it as ⏹.)

Another way to think of this is that the horizontal position is "how many right answers you have" and the vertical position is "how many wrong answers you have" — you start in the bottom left (zero right, zero wrong) and end in the bottom right (all right, zero wrong) but on the way you might go through positions like "six right, two wrong").

Lastly, if you accept a hint, we put a 🔮 in the result grid. If the hint is a correct word, we'll move you across as normal when you enter it, and if the hint is to remove all your wrong answers, you'll jump to the bottom of the grid, potentially giving you a broken line.

More options

In the menu, you can now toggle dark mode, and the new no-animation mode, independently of your device's settings. The no-animation mode replaces the pulsing selection with an outline — if your device is set to reduce animation this has been turned on for you but you can disable it if you prefer the original.

Unselect all

If you need to clear your entire selection and start again, you can do that with the new "unselect all" button that appears in the bottom right when you select tiles.

Hint offer

🔮 If you don't fill anything in for a while, the menu will offer you a hint in the top right — if you're going for a streak you should ignore it! You can still get hints whenever you want in the menu.
